Respect your child’s new maturity

When your child was younger, you probably planned most of his day. Now he needs more freedom—and more responsibility.
To help:
•Offer privileges, but tie them to accountability. For example, if your child always does his home- work, let him choose a regular study time that works for him, such as after school or dinner.
•Offer more guidance and less direction. When your child has a
problem, try not to solve it for him immediately. Ask questions like, “Have you considered this?” or “What would happen if you tried this?” Let him think about it.
•Connect with your child. He needs to see your love, caring and appreciation. Make time for him every day. Ask his opinion—and
show respect for his answers
