Encourage a positive perspective
Falling into a rut is normal once in a while. But your child shouldn’t make a habit of it. If she seems frustrated about school (“Class is boring! What’s the point?”), give her motivation to stay on track. You can:
•Suggest a positive outlook. When she speaks negatively, offer alternatives. (She says: “This is too hard. I can’t do it.” You say: “It isn’t easy, but you can do it. Let’s work together.”)
•Encourage goal setting. Help your child set small, manageable objectives. Instead of deciding to get an “A” in science, for example, have her concentrate on weekly quizzes.
•Put things in to perspective. Thinking about others reminds kids that everyday concerns— while important—are just one part of life. Think of ways you can help others together.
