About the Counselor

My name is Tim Munnerlyn and I am the Middle School Counselor at the the American Community School of Abu Dhabi. I have maintained this blog as a way to assist students, parents, teachers and counselors not only in the Abu Dhabi expat community but all international school communities around the world. I plan to post many types of resources (links to useful websites, presentations, pictures, articles, stories, podcasts and videocasts) that can be used by our learning community and other counseling professions around the world.

  1. Hello,
My name is Amber Lowi and I am a graduate student at San Francisco State University. Currently, I am recruiting participants to complete a survey on the adolescent experience of international living.

If you know of anyone who is eligible and may want to participate in this study would you please forward this information?

    Eligible participants will be:
    1) between 14-18 years of age
    2) living abroad as an expat or Third Culture Kid, and
    3) living with at least one parent

Individuals who chose to participate will be asked to complete a survey. The survey will assess the adolescent’s perceptions of themselves, family, school and experiences in the host country.

For more information regarding this study please review the information found at http://userwww.sfsu.edu/~alowi

To take the survey, please go to the site below. Participants will be asked to answer a few questions to determine eligibility, and also to provide electronic assent before beginning the survey.

The survey is completely confidential. Participation is voluntary. Further, a participant may choose to stop participation at any time, and does not have to answer any questions they do not wish to answer.

If you are interested in obtaining the results of this study you can provide me with contact information and I will send the results when the study is complete. Individual results will not be available. Please feel free to contact me at alowi@sfsu.edu or call me at 415.279.0867.

Again, thank you so much for your help. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions.

    Take care,

    Amber Lowi

  2. Dear Tim,

What a nice blog! I really like your style of entries, they are very poignant, to the point, and informative. I don’t come across to many edublogs by counselors and would love your consent to feature the “International School Counselor” on our TIST site.

TIST is a recently launched project by fellow international school teachers. It’s a site dedicated to a number of interests:

    - Sharing instructional strategies
    - Integrating instructional technology, web 2.0, tutorials
    - Insights on international teaching
    - Questions and concerns about IB
    - Cross-curricular and cross-continental collaborative projects
    - Job fairs and the recruitment process
    - Advice about future teaching destinations and cultural adjustment
    - Keeping up with old colleagues and making new contacts
    - And soon… the International School Teacher Podcast

Have a look at what’s already there. It’s early on but we currently have teachers working at international schools in fifteen countries over five continents. Of course please do us to the honor of signing up, we would love to have another counselor on board! I would love to hear your take on living in Dubai. I believe the Gulf will be our next destination.

    Thanks so much,
